It’s March 14th which means it’s π day!! Whooo!! . . . whoo? Shall I explain?
π (a.k.a. pi) is a mathematical constant that is the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter, which is approximately equal to 3.14. It’s actually a number that continues infinitely without repeating, but 3.14 is just easier. You can check this out if you wanna see 1 million digits of π (pi): click
Anyway, today is March 14th (3/14). Hence, π Day.
So, how should one celebrate π Day? Should you eat some pie? If you’re a math nerd that’s also into homonyms, I can’t think of a better way to celebrate. Plus, pie is a circle – it’s kismet.
For your listening pleasure, here’s Chris Hardwick and Mike Phirman as Hard ‘n Phirm (ft. Dragon Boy Suede) with the video for their song “Pi”. Might I suggest that you take this time to learn the words to this song in order to later impress your math nerd friends when you can recite over 100 digits of π (pi). You’re sure to be a big hit.
So enjoy π Day. It only comes twice-ish a year*.
*π Approximation Day falls on July 22nd (7/22).
Question: is the above circular dessert a “pie” or perhaps a cheesecake?
Cheesecake day is July 30th.
It’s Humble Pie. Now get off our blog and never come back!
(( And thank you for telling us about Cheesecake Day – prepare for a post about it come July 30th – a picture of a pie will be included. ))
